Abstract

Synthesis of SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites was counducted by doping semiconductor SnO2 by Zn metal. Composites, were made with mass ratio of SnO2 to ZnO (1:0.5), (1:1) and (1:1.5), were characterized used XRD, SEM-EDS and UV-Vis DRS instruments. The XRD characterization results of the SnO2/ZnO composite showed the formation of a typical peak at 2θ around 26o. Energy band gap value of the SnO2/ZnO composite (1:1) obtained from the UV-Vis DRS characterization is 3.15 eV. Morphological character of SnO2/ZnO (1:01) composite characterized using SEM showed a around shape with an uneven surface with the elements composition of Sn (55.00%), O (20.44%) and Zn (24.55%). From the instrumentation results, SnO2/ZnO (1:1) composite has been chosen as photocatalyst to degrade remazol red RB. The photodegradation process of remazol red RB was carried out with several variables including the effect of contact time and the effect of the initial concentration of dye. pHpzc obtained was 7 so that the photodegradation process is carried out under pHpzc at pH 6. The optimum condition for photodegradation was obtained at a contact time of 120 minutes with a concentration of 50 ppm of 86.4%. The results showed that the SnO2/ZnO composite was able to degrade the remazol red RB with a TOC (Total Organic Carbon) result of 33.23%.
