Abstract

The construction of the Kayu Agung-Palembang-Betung (Kapal Betung) toll road has had an impact on farmers who lose their rice fields. They must challange to let the land converted and lose their jobs. The aims of this research were to(1) describing the land conversion pattern that occurs in the construction of the Kayu Agung-Palembang-Betung Toll Road (2) analyzing financial feasibility of compensation provided by the developer based on the comparison between farmer’s lifetime earning and compensation for land. The results of this research are (1) The land conversion pattern of paddy land that occur in Arisan Buntal Village based on the views of farmers is a systematic/enclave pattern. It meant that the conversion occurred running at relatively the same time; (2) The value of land compensation given by the developer is categorized as feasible based on a comparison of farmer’s lifetime earning and compensation for land received by farmers there are significant differences. The reason why the total income of farmer’s household is smaller than compensation is low productivity of paddy. The decline in wetland productivity is due to land clearing for oil palm plantations in higher areas by making canals that make many farmers' land inundated, it has an impact on farmers' income which also implies the farmer’s lifetime earning.
