Abstract

It has been done the research about “The Effect of Methanol Amount and Heating Temperature to Biodiesel Properties from Ketapang Seed Oil (Terminalia Catappa Linn) Using NaOH Catalyst”. The purpose of research is to determine the optimum condition of making methyl ester with parameters include temperature variations (40, 50, 60, 70 °C) and methanol (10 : 90, 20 : 80, 30 : 70, 40 : 60, 50: 50) and to determine the characteristics of methyl ester by the method of ASTM (American Standard for Testing Materials) at the optimum temperature and variations of methanol. The result showed that the optimum conditions of methyl ester at 60°C and the ratio 20: 80 in the amount of 60,9 mL. Determination of the characteristics of methyl ester showed that the ratio of 20 : 80 at 60°C is relatively better with 9,398 cSt of viscosity, 888,9 kg/m3 of density, 55°C of flash point, 44 of Setana index, 0,43% weight of carbon residue, 0.008 % of weight content of sediment, 0,01% weight of the sulfur content, and 0.08% volume of water content.
