Abstract

This study was conducted at Workshop and Agricultural Product Chemistry Laboratory of Agricultural Technology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University as weel as Chemical Engineering Laboratory of Sriwijaya Polytechnic from YULIZAWATI. April to May 2008. The method used in this study was tabulation method in the from of tables and graphs. The observed parameters were briquette dimension, water content, calory value, easiness of briquette buming as well as briquette physical characteristrics involving of endurance to impact, buming rate, pressing, strength, hygroscopic behaviour, and bulk density. The materials used in this study were kemel palm shell charcoal, palm oil empty bunch, and tapioca flour. There was eight composition ratios in term of base materials in order to determine the best composition. The results showed that briquette had cylindrical form with 2 cm in diameter and 5.30 cm in average height. The best physical characteristics in term of water content, endurance to impact, buming rate, briquette structure, bulk density, and pressing strength was produced by using composition of 80 % kemel palm shell charcoal, 10 %palm oil empty bunch, whereas the poorest one was produced by using composition of 10 % kemel palm shell charcoal, 80 % palm oil empty bunch. The maximum calory value was 5,650.20 cal.kg'1 using composition of 80 % kemel palm shell charcoal, 10 % palm oil empty bunch, whereas the minimum one 3,097.92 cal.kg'1 using composition of 10 % kemel palm shell charcoal, 80 % palm oil empty bunch.
