Abstract

Recently there is no actual data about the wide of mangrove forest in Indonesia especially in east wast of Banyuasin in South Sumatra province. Research about monitoring the condition of mangrove in estuary of Banyuasin river, Sungsang and Upang in South Sumatra province by using image of landsat-TM satelite. This Method is conducted by making each class of image farm closing landsat-TM recording year 1992, 2001 and 2003. Determination class of mangrove relied on visualisation of colour visually and characteristic assess bound of spectral/DN. Classification conducted by intake of practice area (area training) using image of False Colour Composite (FCC) combination of canal 4, 5 and 3. This combination represent most appropriate combination to detect existence of mangrove, differentiating forest of mangrove with forest land and detect mangrove zonasi. Division of class of mangrove relied on histogram value from result of vegetation index, with assumption one histogram top deputize one closeness storey; level. The result of satellite image analysis of landsat-TM show that mangrove area at estuary of Banyuasin river, Sungsang and Upang during period 1992 until 2003 experiencing of degradation equal to 22041,09 ha in the year 2001 and 20546,25 ha in the year 2003 caused by human being activity, like : hewing, forest conversion of mangrove for the farm of plantation, settlement and fishery. Condition of ebb can influence change of mangrove area.
