Abstract
Abstract. Learning about place value is an important things in mathematics.However, primary school studentshave difficultyin understandingplace valuein whole numbers. There are no meaningful approaches for them such as use the idea of exchange of ten units for one group of ten, group of ten tens into a hundred. Thisstudy aimed to supports students enable to learn about place value notation to at using exchanging of marine where ten shrimp for one crabs and ten crabs for one fish. Design researchis chosen to reach the research goal. RealisticMathematicsEducation (RME) underlines the design of activity. This studydescribeshow themarineexchangeactivitycontributes to thesecond gradestudents at SDNegeri179Palembangto understand theconcept ofplace value. The resultsshowedthat theactivityof marineexchangecanhelpstudents to understandplace value of three digits numbers.The use of modelsindescribinganddiscussedbystudentsshowthat students' understanding ofthe valueof three digits numbers based on location of the numbers.
