Abstract

An unhealthy lifestyle can trigger degenerative diseases. Degenerative diseases arise due to excessive free radical activity in the body. Traditionally, the people of Ogan Ilir use several medicinal plants to treat diseases. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity and total flavonoid content of the fractions of meniran herb (P. niruri), starfruit leaves (A. blimbi), noni fruit (M. citrifolia), guava bark (S. aqueum), bay leaf (S. polyanthum), and bitter herb (A. paniculata) as well as characterization of the fraction that has the highest antioxidant activity. The maceration method was carried out by graded maceration on n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol as solvents. Determination of antioxidant activity was carried out on the fractions using the DPPH free radical reduction method and the total flavonoid content was carried out using the colorimetric method. The results of the research on antioxidant activity in the n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions were not active antioxidants, while the methanol fraction which had very strong antioxidant activity, namely guava stem bark and bay leaves, meniran herbs were classified as moderate, star fruit wuluh leaves were weak, noni fruit and herbs Sambiloto is classified as an inactive antioxidant. The relationship between antioxidant activity and total flavonoid levels was negatively and moderately correlated with the Pearson Correlation value (-0.543). The negative correlation relationship is interpreted as the greater the total flavonoid content, the smaller the IC50 value. The characterization of the fractions having the highest antioxidant activity met the requirements of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (2008).
