Abstract
This research was conducted in October 2010 - January 2011. Sampling of sponge was conducted in the waters of the Tegal island Lampung. This study aims to obtain symbiotic bacteria of sponge that has material potential as antibacterial and know the biochemical nature of the symbiotic bacterium of sponge that has the potential material as antibacterial. Bacteria of sponge were inoculated on NA media with pour plate method. Results of inoculation were purified by the streak plate method. Purification selected 10 bacteria isolates to be performed screening of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcusa aureus. Bacteria were capable to forming inhibition zone were characterized to determine biochemically characteristic. This study found two isolate of symbiotic bacteria of sponge that produce bioactive compounds that were antibacterial, they were bacteria A23 that can restrain S. aureus and E. coli and bacteria A25 that can restrain S. aureus. A23 bacteria are gram-positive bacteria ferment carbohydrates into lactic acid but don’t produce high concentration acid compounds, able to use carbon sources from citrate, produce the enzyme of urease, catalase, oxidase, glatinase, and motility. A25 bacteria are gram-negative bacteria, ferment carbohydrates into lactic acid but don’t produce high concentration of acid compounds, can ferment carbohydrates 2,3 butanadiol, able to use carbon sources from citrat, produce the enzyme urease, catalase, and oxidase.
