Abstract

BOD (BiologicaI Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) are Chemical parameters that were measured to determine the presence of organic matter in the water. The aim of this study are to determine the input load of organic matter from BOD and COD indicators in Banyuasin estuary'. This research was conducted in April 2013. Determination of sampling point using purposive sampling method witb the input area comes from Lalan River, Banyuasin River, and Bungin River. This study was conducled using in silu method in Banyuasin estuary waters at low tide, whereas analysis were conducted at the Laboratory of Chemical Analysis, Department of Chemistry and Laboratory of Oceanography, Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Sriwijaya. The COD analysis was conducted using spectrophotometric method, BOD analysis using DO meter, and data analysis using Software Ocean Data View (ODV) 4.3.6. The results showed that the BOD input load of all rivers is 16896.99 grams/sec and BOD output load in the estuary is 13152.26 grams/sec, while the COD input load is 295,325.80 grams/sec and the COD output load is 253,255.15 grams/sec. That means the input load of organic matter from the river is greater than the output load or accumulation in the estuary due to the influence of waters oceanographic factors. The oceanographic parameters that were measured are temperature, salinity, current, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen). Based ou the characteristics of salinity, Banyuasin estuary waters belong to the partially mixed estuary type.
