Abstract

Research entitled hydrolysis of cellobiose using sulfated zirconia catalyst with a gallium oxide promoter has been carried out. Sulfated zirconia catalyst with a gallium oxide promoter was synthesized with various promoter content of 2% (GSZ-2), 5% (GSZ-5) and 10% (GSZ-10). The catalyst obtained was analyzed by XRD, GSA, SEM-EDS and solid acidity. Sulfated zirconia and sulfated zirconia with a gallium promoter are used as catalysts in the hydrolysis reaction of cellobiose to glucose. Cellobiose hydrolysis was carried out with variations in time of 60, 90, 120 minutes and temperatures of 160°C and 175°C. The results of the hydrolysis were analyzed using HPLC. The results of characterization using XRD showed that sulfated zirconia display peaks at 28.10° and 31.41° Meanwhile, sulfated zirconia with gallium promoter was at peaks of 30.20° and 50.55°. Characterization with GSA showed that GSZ-10 catalyst had the largest surface area. The results of SEM analysis showed that the surface of the sulfated zirconia catalyst with and without the gallium promoter had irregular shape and size. Acidity analysis with ammonia gas showed that the GSZ-10 catalyst had a higher acidity value than the other catalysts, namely 1.867 × 10-3 mol g-1. The results were characterized using HPLC showing the highest glucose level of 4.367% was obtained underconditions of 120 minutes and a temperature of 175°C with SZ catalyst
