Abstract

Forest and land fires have become a problem that often occurs in Sumatra and Kalimantan, especially in the area of wide distribution of peatlands. forest and land fires from the South Sumatra Forestry Service that occurred in Ogan Ilir Regency were recorded in 2014 covering an area of 17,728 ha, in 2015 an area of 12,297 ha, in 2017 an area of 2,614 ha and in 2018 an area of 3,925 ha. In 2019 it increased to 894.09 ha. The fires that occur are caused by several factors, namely natural factors and human activities in land management. This study was conducted to determine the public's perception of the occurrence of wetland fires in North Indralaya District. The research design used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, which examines and identifies community perceptions of the occurrence of fires in the wetlands of North Indralaya District, South Sumatra. The selection of informants was done by using a purposive sampling method. The total informants are sixteen people with details of four expert informants and twelve key informants. The results showed that the community's knowledge of fire was still very minimal, social factors in the community caused conflicts between farmers with one another. The burning method provides advantages such as low cost, fast time and requires little energy. The culture of managing land with fire has begun to be abandoned. The attitude of the people who are anxious and feel disturbed from land burning activities. Subjective norms, there is an urge not to burn land. Perceived behavioral control factors, the spread of socialization on the prohibition of burning is still not evenly distributed. A strong intention factor to develop managed land. Increase public awareness both from education, law enforcement, technical handling. Disseminate or provide education to the public regarding socialization and applicable regulations. conduct training on peatland management, tidal land and peat water management
