Abstract

One of the uses of the Musi River is as the main route of trade and transportation for residents in South Sumatra. The number of human activities carried out along the Musi River has an impact on the physical condition of the river and water quality. These human activities produce waste that is dumped directly into the waters of the Musi River. The type of waste that is disposed of and found is plastic waste. Plastic waste that flows into the Musi River is divided into macroplastics and microplastics. Microplastics are plastics that float in water and are degraded to less than 5 mm in size. This study aims to identify and analyze the abundance of microplastics in the Lower Musi River. The research was carried out in September 2021 with sampling carried out at six station points, namely Gandus, Ampera, Pusri, Upang, Muara Sungsang and Tanjung Carat. The water quality parameters measured consisted of temperature, pH, salinity and current velocity. The research stages are density separation using 30% NaCl, degradation of organic matter using 30% H2O2 and filtering using 45 m Whattman filter paper. Identification using a 4X magnification binocular microscope. Microplastic polymer test using the FT-IR method. The identification results show that there are 4 types of microplastics in the Lower Musi River, including fiber 1,253 particles, granule 265 particles, fragments 109 particles and film 59 particles. The results of the fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) test indicated 5 types consisting of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), Polyamide (PA), Polyethylene (PE), Polyprophylene (PP), and Polytetra Fluroethylene (PTFE).
