Abstract

Background: Antioxidant potential of vitamin C is useful in reducing oxidative stress, free radicals, and reactive oxygen species, which may assist in the improved outcomes of periodontal therapy. However, research on the effect of vitamin C supplementation in the management of periodontitis is still very limited. Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the effect of vitamin C supplementation in the management of periodontitis in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: This research is a systematic review with quantitative analysis. The journal databases used are PubMed, Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Research Gate. The literature used was English and Indonesian journals with limiting the time of year of publication to the last 10 years. The obtained journals will be selected then proceded with bias analysis and data extraction will be carried out. Result: Quantitative analysis conducted in four journals showed that increasing doses of vitamin C in scaling and root planing treatments have a moderate effect on the healing of periodontal disease. Conclusion: Scaling and root planing treatments with additional vitamin C supplementation are not effective in treating chronic periodontitis.
