Abstract

One of the ways to reduce excess CO2 on earth can be in the form of converting CO2 into methanol. The preparation and characterization of Cu2O-ZnO/C and Pt/C electrodes with their application in the conversion of CO2 to methanol by electrochemical reduction method using Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) as electrolyte membrane have been carried out. The electrodes were cast by spraying method and immerse into KHCO3 electrolyte to know the electrochemical performance. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) analysis used to determine the value of Electrochemical Catalyst Surface Area (ECSA) of electrode indicate Cu2O-ZnO/C electrode as 36.19 cm2/g and the Pt/C electrode as 324.08 cm2/g with scan rate 25 mV/s. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis was performed to obtain the conductivity value of Cu2O-ZnO/C electrode was 0.012 x 10-3 S/cm and Pt/C electrode got a conductivity value was 0.041 x 10-3 S/cm. Measurement of pH was carried out to find its effect on the conversion of CO2 into methanol. Converted methanol with electrolyte variation of KHCO3 1M has the lowest pH of 5.1. Current measurement were carried out during operation time and showed a stable current at 1M KHCO3 variation. The result of the conversion of CO2 to methanol were measured by a methanol analyzer which showed the highest percentage of methanol in 1M electrolyte concentration of 3.45%.
