Abstract

Activated carbon is a porous solid containing 85-89 % carbon produced from materials containing carbon by heating at high temperatures using gas, water vapor and chemicals. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in carbonization temperature, carbonization time and Na₂CO3 concentration, on the characterization of coffee grounds activated carbon and its absorption of phenol. This study was initiated by the carbonization of dried coffee grounds in a furnace with various carbonization temperatures of 300, 400 and 500°C for 60 minutes and then sieved. Then, it was continued with variations in carbonization time of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes and chemically activated using various concentrations of Na₂CO3 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 M. Based on temperature variations, the best temperature was 300°C, carbonization time was 60 minutes and Na2CO3 concentration was 3 M with 5.32% of water content, 7.54% of ash content, 731.79 mg/g of iodine absorption and 701,62 m²/g of surface area. The highest phenol absorption efficiency on activated carbon was 66.67 % and phenol absorption capacity was 33.33 mg/g. Based on the coffee grounds characterization test, it was found that the activated carbon had complied with SNI 06-3730-1995.
