Abstract

This study aims to find out students in using capital letters and punctuation marks in the narrative essays of grade IV students of SDN 62 Palembang. The research was conducted in the even semester of the 2020/2021 school year. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, which is to study and analyze data objectively in accordance with the data that has been analyzed. The subjects of the study were students of classes IVa and IVb who were randomly drawn a total of 17 learners with a percentage of 25% of 74 learners. The data collection technique used for documentation during the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers asked the class teachers of SDN 62 Palembang to forward the results of students' work in the form of photos of student work to researchers through whatsapp private messages, there were errors in writing student capital letters in the narrative essay as many as 72 errors with a percentage of 23.61%. Meanwhile, the error of placing punctuation marks on the narrative essays that students have written is 70 errors with a percentage of 24.28%. This shows that class IVa and IVb students of SDN 62 Palembang have difficulty in writing capital letters and placing punctuation marks. And for subsequent researchers to make a study that is not limited to the use of capital letters and punctuation only, but also on the use of rules about abbreviations. In addition, the use of punctuation should also not be limited to period and comma punctuation. Keywords : capital letters, punctuation marks, narrative essays.
