Abstract

Penyebab penyakit periodontal terutama adalah plak dan karang gigi. Plak gigi yang mengandung mikroflora patogenik merupakan salah satu fungsi utama terhadap terjadinya dan berkembangnya penyakit karies dan gingivitis. Penggunaan xylitol mampu mempercepat proses pembentukan kembali mineral gigi (mineralisasi) sehingga dapat membantu menurunkan pembentukan plak gigi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan xylitol dengan penghambatan skor plak pada siswa SLTP. Jenis penelitian ini adalah survei dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Sampel berjumlah 60 orang yang dibagi menjadi 2 kelompok, kelompok yang pertama siswa yang mengunyah xylitol dan kelompok lainnya non xylitol (kumur). Data yang diambil adalah penurunan skor plak dan skor plak tetap. Hasil penelitian ini adalah 90% responden xylitol yang mengalami penurunan skor plak dan 13,33% skor plak tetap. Dengan chi-square, koreksi yate 's dan significancy secara statistik (p<0.05) maka dapat disimpulkan terdapat hubungan antara xylitol dengan penghambatan skor plak. Perlu dilakukan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang hubunganxylitol dengan penghambatan skor plak dengan jumlah dan sampel yang lebih banyak serta waktu penelitian yang lebih lama.
