Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of using aluminum electrodes on the electrocoagulation process with a variens amount of current density and operating time on decreasing pH, TSS, TDS, oil and COD in POME. This study used a Completely Randomized Factorial Design with two treatment factors and was repeated 3 times. The first factor is current density (10, 40, 70 and 100 Ampere) and the second factor is operating time (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours). Parameters observed were pH, levels of TSS, TDS and oil. The results showed that current density, operating time and the interaction between the only two had a significant effect on pH, while for TSS levels, TDS had no significant effect on the interaction between the two and oil parameters only had a significant effect on operating time. The best treatment was selected based on a value that was close to the quality standard of palm oil effluent in accordance with the Regulation of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Indonesia number 5 of 2014 concerning the quality standard of waste water. The treatment with a current of 100 Ampere for 5 hours was selected as the best treatment with the efficiency of reducing pH, TDS, TSS, and COD levels from the current strength of 5.1%, 12.5%, 73.3%, 82.3, respectively. % and the decrease in pH, TDS, TSS, Oil and COD from operating time was 5.14%, 10.85%, 72.3%, 73.5% and 82.3%.
