Abstract

The leaffish (Pristolepis grooti) is a kind of freshwater fish of family Nandidae, mostly live in inland waters in South Sumatra. Utilization of leaffish has an impact on high fishing rates for aquaculture activities. Therefore, a proper transportation process is needed to assist and guarantee consumers or cultivators to get the seeds as their need. The purpose of this research was to determine the optimal initial temperature in the closed system transportation of the leaffish for 24 hours, which has good survival and post-transportation growth with ideal physiological conditions. This research was conducted in Tanjung Raya swamp, Indralaya Utara, Ogan Ilir, Aquaculture and Pond Experiment Laboratory, and Basic Fisheries Laboratory, Study Program of Aquaculture, Departement of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The study was conducted in September-November 2021. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and three repetitions. The treatments were carried out using different initial temperatures, namely P1: 20oC, P2: 22oC, P3: 24oC, and P4: 26oC with a density of 50 fish L-1. The results showed that the optimal initial temperature for the leaffish transportation was P3 (24oC) with survival rate of 92,31%, oxygen consumption level of 0.033 mg O2 g-1 hour-1 and blood glucose level of 123,67 mg dL-1. During the recovery period the survival rate was 100%, feed efficiency 12,53%, absolute weight growth of 0,14 g and the best physiological conditions were found in transported fish with initial temperature P3 (24oC). The range of water quality that was measured before and after the transportation and recovery period was still within the tolerance limit for the leaffish.
