Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction can cause tissue injury to the gingival epithelium. The post extraction wound will undergo the wound healing process. This process involves reepithelialization process which contributes in forming a new-strong epithelium layer that can protect the underlying tissue. Gambier is a herbal plant that contains active substances such as cathecin, tannin, and flavonoid that are useful for wound healing and expected to accelerate the reepithelialization process. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the effect of gambier extract on reepithelialization of post extraction wound of wistar rats. Method: This study was an in vivo study using 30 male wistar rats which were divided into five groups. Group 1, 2, and 3 were given gambier extract 10%, 15%, and 20% ointment. Group 4 and 5 were given iod glyserin and placebo ointment. Each group was treated twice a day for 14 days. Epithelial thickness was measured by making histologic preparations and observed using the optical microscope. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA test. Result: The gambier extract 15% had the highest average of epithelial thickness compared to other groups but there was no significant difference. Conclusion: The gambier extract 10%, 15%, and 20% had no significant effect on reepithelialization of post-extraction wound of wistar rats. Key words: gambier, reepithelialization, wound healing, tooth extraction.
