Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the determinants of profitability for commercial banks in ASEAN. The analysis was based on panel data regression using OLS, Fixed Effect Model, and Random Effect Model for 170 commercial banks from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam over the 2011 to 2019 period. The profitability of commercial banks in ASEAN is measured by four proxies, namely, Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Net Interest Margin (NIM), and Profit Before Tax (PBT). Bank-specific factors include capital adequacy, credit quality, insolvency risk, efficiency, and liquidity. Further, a set of macroeconomic factors such as inflation, exchange rate, interest rate, and economic growth are used as independent variables. The results revealed that capital adequacy, credit quality, insolvency risk, and efficiency are found to have a positive significant impact on all profitability proxies. However, liquidity is insignificant to ROE and is found to have a negative impact on other proxies. Inflation rate, interest rate, and economic growth are found to have a positive significant impact on profitability. On the other hand, the exchange rate is insignificant to PBT and is found to have a negative impact on other profitability proxies.
