Abstract

This research aims to determine how the hallyu or Korean Wave cultural process becomes an instrument of cultural imperialism in Indonesia. Hallyu has become a phenomenon that has been giving a major influence on contemporary culture, the music industry, the film industry and the television industry to aspects of the behavior of various people, including the Indonesian people. In this study, hallyu is in the context of audio-visual, such as K-Pop, K-Drama and Film which has experienced a significant increase in Indonesia. The research method used in this study was a qualitative method. The data that had been used by the researcher was collected from the results of interviews with cultural experts, literature studies and surveys in the form of research questionnaires with a total of 245 research respondents. The results showed that hallyu culture became an instrument of cultural imperialism in Indonesia through a process that started from the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and South Korea. This bilateral relationship then made hallyu became a cultural hegemony in Indonesia. Furthermore, through cultural hegemony, hallyu poses a threat to Indonesia’s national identity, so that national identity ran into a crisis. Thereafter, that process was known as hallyu as an instrument of cultural imperialism in Indonesia. Keywords: Hallyu, Cultural Imperialism, K-Pop, K-Drama, Korean Film
