Abstract

Parents can take the part to make a contribution in supporting their children academic. There are many variations of parental support in a life that can be positive, primarily if parents focus on achieving their child's academic and social/emotional skills and further enhancing their child's opportunities for the future. This research wanted to investigate the evidence on whether it is true that parental support has a correlation with students' academic success at Sriwijaya University English Education Students. This study discussed four aspects of parental support in students' academic success. They are parents as advocates in the economy, parents as motivators, parents as monitors, and parents as models. This study used correlational quantitative study that aimed to determine whether or not there was a significant correlation between parental support and academic success. The sample was 121 students from the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth semesters of the English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sriwijaya University with purposive sampling. The instruments of this study were the Questionnaire of Parental Support and academic success documentation, which were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS. This study indicated that English education students of Sriwijaya University had a very good level of academic success. The findings showed a significant correlation between parental support and academic success (p-value: 0.049 and r-obtained: 0.179) and the contribution of parental support were 2.4% of the variance to academic success. Therefore, the researcher hopes other researchers will focus more on studying for parental support for the students academic success to make the good quality human resources in education.
