Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest level of rice consumption per capita in the world. Indonesian rice consumption per capita has been increasing every year and this condition can not be fulfilled with domestic rice production. This problem has been causing the vulnerability of the national food security system. One of the causes is due to the lack of the suitable land area. Swampland is an alternative land that can be used to increase food production. Research has been carried out to obtain rice varieties that are tolerant to conditions in the nontidal swampland. A series of crossbreeding and selection activities were carried out using Inpago 5 and Inpara 8 parents to obtain BC2F1 accession. This study was aimed to examine the effect of drought-stress at vegetative phase on the growth and production of BC2F1 accession and its parents Inpago 5 and Inpara 8 varieties. The research was conducted at the Green House and the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Department of Agricultural Cultivation, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from August 2021 to February 2022. The method used was the split plot design with 3 repetitions. The main plot were drought treatment (K) consists of K0 = 100% field capacity, K1 = drought treatment for 3 days, K2 = drought treatment for 6 days. The subplot were rice variety (V) consisting of V1 = BC2F1 accession, V2 = Inpago 5 variety, and V3 = Inpara 8 variety. The results showed that BC2F1 acession which was backcrossing progeny of Inpara 8 and Inpago 5 showed more tolerant to drought condition than Inpara 8, altrough still slighty below Inpago 5. This research observed that BC2F1 accession, in general, had a better values in root and shoot length and dry weight; rice-grain number and weight; and weight of 100 seeds as compared to Inpara 8.
