Abstract
Climate change remains an important issue along with increasing greenhouse gas emissions due to industrial activities, land use changes, land fires, and the use of fossil fuels. Therefore, efforts to control GHG emissions, for example through maintaining and increasing forest cover, are the key to increase atmospheric carbon sequestration and carbon storage in the soil. The purpose of this study was to estimate soil carbon stocks under various types of land cover which are collectively called Green Open Spaces at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya. This study was conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. The land cover types were classifiedinto(1) Rubber Plantation,(2) Oil Palm Plantation, (3) Mixed Land Use, and (4)Arboretum. Soil sampling pointsin each vegetation type were determined at random. Both distrubed and undistrubed soil samples were collected fromthe depth of 0-30 cm. The results of this study indicated that soil carbon stock under the Green Open Spaces at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya was low from 54.82 to 61.74 tons C/ha. In addition, plant litter accumulation was also relatively low. Current study also found that there was no correlation between soil carbon and bulk density. More effort required to soil carbon stock in the Green Open Spaces of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya to avoid soil carbon loss and to increase the soil carbon stock.
