Abstract

This study aims to determine the leaf anatomical structure of several plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family including basil (Ocimum sanctum L.), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.), sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack.), red salvia (Salvia splendens Sellow ex Roem. & Schult.), buakchao grass (Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze), undel-undel grass (Hyptis rhomboidea Mart & Gal.), pagoda flower (Clerodendrum japonicum (Thunb.) Sweet). The method used is a descriptive method, which is to describe and explain how the anatomical structure of the transverse incision is made on several types of leaves of the Lamiaceae family. Observations were made using a binocular microscope with a magnification of 100X and 400X. The research was conducted at the Biology Education Laboratory, Sriwijaya University in March 2022. The parameters observed included the type of tissue that composes the leaf organs of the Lamiaceae family in a cross section, the number of layers of the upper epidermis and palisade parenchyma tissue, and cell size. The results showed that the leaves of the Lamiaceae family were generally composed of cuticle, upper epidermis, palisade parenchyma, spongy parenchyma, xylem, phloem, parenchyma, and lower epidermis. However, in the leaves of basil plants, buakchao grass, and undel-undel grass, collenchyma tissue was found. The leaves studied were generally composed of one upper epidermal layer and one palisade parenchyma layer. However, the Sungkai leaf consists of 1-3 layers of the upper epidermis and two layers of palisade parenchyma. The size of cells in several leaves of the Lamiaceae family varies, namely upper epidermal cells 4-25 µm, palisade parenchyma cells 7-23 µm, spongy parenchyma cells 3-15 µm, xylem cells 2-15 µm, phloem cells 1-6 µm, parenchyma cells 5-25 µm, collenchyma cells 3-11 µm, and lower epidermal cells 4-18 µm. The results of this study can be used as data or information about the leaf anatomy of several plants of the Lamiaceae family and can be used as a source of learning for KD 3.3 and 4.3 which are made in the form of booklets.
