Abstract

The grounding system has an important role which has a function to eliminate potential differences by releasing excess current that occurs when there is a disturbance in the electrical system and when the system is hit by a lightning strike. The lower the resistance value, the better the grounding system will be. there needs to be an effort in reducing the resistance value by adding additives because it will affect the moisture in the soil. This research will focus on additives derived from residual waste in the form of fly ash and charcoal where these substances have good chemical elements in absorbing water in the grounding system. This study used 5 experimental rod electrodes with a length of 1 m with a diameter of 0.015 m with the first 2 electrodes using fly ash additives and the other 2 electrodes using charcoal and one electrode without using additives. The percentage change in resistance generated in the morning data of each substance the additives used was slightly better which ranged from 38.02% to 40,81% compared to the afternoon data ranging from 35.46 % to 38.69% and afternoon data ranged from 36.10 % to 37,73%. The fly ash additive is quite effective in reducing the resistance of the grounding system and the resulting resistance value is not too far from that of the charcoal additive. In terms of economic value, fly ash has a fairly affordable price compared to charcoal additives.
