Abstract

The synthesis of CaO/Fe3O4 composites has been carried out using the coprecipitation method with a weight ratio of 1:1. CaO used from blood clam shells were calcined at 1000 °C for 6 hours. Analysis of CaO/ Fe3O4 composite results using BET, XRD, FTIR and VSM, then applied to the adsorption of congo red dye with variables of contact time, concentration of congo red dye and temperature. The results showed that the CaO/ Fe3O4 composite had a surface area of 138,601 m2/g and the pores were classified as mesoporous. The CaO/Fe3O4 composite has magnetic properties with a magnetization saturation value of 45,252 emu/g. The diffraction pattern of the CaO/ Fe3O4 composite showed a match with the JCPDS diffraction pattern No.00-004-0777 for CaO with cubic system and JCPDS No.01-088-0315 for Fe3O4 with cubic system. The presence of Ca-O and Fe-O groups in the CaO/Fe3O4 composite was shown at wave numbers 875,68 and 580,57 cm-1. Congo red dye adsorption using CaO/Fe3O4 composite obtained optimum conditions at a contact time of 40 minutes, concentration of congo red 250 mg/L and temperature of 50 °C. The adsorption kinetics of congo red dye showed that the CaO/Fe3O4 composite followed pseudo second order kinetics with a K2 value 0,151 g/mg.min. The adsorption isotherm was in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model and maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 54,054 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies show that the adsorption process occurs spontaneously and endothermic.
