Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a chronic nervous disorder that indicated by repeatedly seizure twice or more, spontaneous, without provocated that happened on children. Research of characteristic of epilepsy on children in Mohammad Hoesin Hospital is not find yet. Objective: Identify the characteristic of epilepsy on children in Mohammad Hoesin Hospital period of 2008-2010. Methods: Observational descriptive study by cross sectional design. Ali the sample of medical records of children with epilepsy in Polyclinic of children of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang from year 2008-2010 that eiigible the criteria inclusion. Result: Of the 73 samples, mostly children with epilepsy from aged 5-14 years old, which is 48 children (65.7%). Boys are 40 (54.8%), girls are 33 (45.2%). General seizure type is 56 children (76.7%) and parsial type is 17 children (23.3%). Seizure duration <15 minutes is 71 children (97.3%) and seizure duration >15 minutes is 2 children (2.7%). A number of epileptic seizure in a year 0 times is 10 children (13.7%) and >1 times is 63 children (86.3%). Idiopathic etiology is 50 children (68.5%) and symptomatic is 23 children (31.5%). Monotheraphy is 62 children (84.9%) and polytherapy is 11 children (15.1%). Two children (2.7%) with diet ketogenic therapy and no diet is 71 children (97.3%). Duration therapy >2 years is 4 children (57.1%) and during 2 years is 3 children (42.9%). Raise of doses of anti-epileptic drug is twice more than early doses most on 2 children (28.6%). Conclusion: Children with epilepsy is more in 5-14 years old, majority of them is boys. General seizure type, seizure duration <15 minutes, a number of epileptic seizure >1 times per year, idiopathic etiology, monotherapy especially valproicn acid, no diet ketogenic, therapy duration >2 years with raise of doses of antiepileptic drug is the most found characteristic.
