Abstract

Contraception is an attempt to prevent pregnancy that is transient or resident. Contraception can be done without using any tools, done mechanically, or by using a drug/device or operation method. The main purpose of this research is to determine the prevalence and factors that affect the use of oral contraceptives in Kalidoni district of Palembang. A cross-research that is both descriptive analytical and cross-sectional was done. This research has been done in Kalidoni district of Palembang from October to December 2011. Samples are obtained from 100 women of fertile age and then the results are presented in the form of tables and frequency. From the group of respondents who are users of birth control pills, 55.5% were aged 35 or over, 44.4% are women who are not working, educated high school and below are 89.3%, 53% have more than two children, and 46.6% have the smallest child aged less than 3. The prevalence of birth control pills is as much as 28% while the women of fertile age who do not use birth control pills are as much as 72%. From the results obtained, the factor which have the most effect on the use of birth control pills and are risk factors are age(OR=9.656, 95%CI 1.891-49.311, p=0.006), and the parity(OR=6.883, 95%CI 2.131-22.235, p=0.001). The smallest child age (OR=1.513, 95%CI 1.135-7.931, p=0.463) and education (OR=1.396, 95%CI 0.522-14.580, p=0.751) have a connection with the use of birth control pills but the relationship is not meaningful. A related factor that is meaningful and is a protective factor is job (OR=0.215, 95%CI 0.070-0.733, p=0.044). The prevalence of the use of birth control pills in Kalidoni district is as much as 28%. Factors that affect the use of oral contraceptives are age, parity, and jobs.
