Abstract

The dominant risk factors toward constipation in elementary school students are hisiory of constipation, history o f constipation in family, and consumption of cow’s milk. The purposes of this study were to find prevalance and risk factors of constipation in SD Negeri 2 and 6 Palembang. This study was an observational study with cross sectional design. This study was conducted in SD Negeri 2 and 6 Palembang, and it was held on September until December 2012. The population is all of the 1th grade students, with total number of 251 students. Only 214 respondens filled the questionnaire and retumed it. The data was analyzed using univariate, continued with bivariate, and finally multivariate analysis. The data were process and analysis by using SPSS 16.0. This study found 41 (19,2%) students with constipation. This study was using Chi-Square test to get the correlation between constipation and risk factors. The correlation between the history of constipation before entering school and constipation has a value of />=0,000 (/>0,01), the history of family member’s constipation and constipation has a value of />=0,001 (p<0,01). While the correlation between the consumption of cow’s milk and constipation has a value of/>=0,509 (/><0,05). It can be concluded that there was a very significant correlation between the history of constipation before entering school and constipation and also the history of family member’s constipation and constipation. In multivariate analysis only the history of constipation that was found to have correlation between constipation in elementary school students (probability of 87,5%). These results do not necessarily reflect the condition of the population because a number of subjects did not retum the questionnaires.
