Abstract

Construction work in its implementation requires a lot of human labor, both men and women. However, 98% of the population in the construction sector is dominated by men while only 2% of women. This condition is a threat for student who are currently studying in the construction sector, especially in the civil engineering department, which can affect future career opportunities. In addition, there is 55.63% of construction experts are occupied by the field of civil engineering, therefore the respondents used are from majors that are relevant to their fields. The purpose of this research was to determine the understanding of Civil Engineering and Planning students at Sriwijaya University on the barriers and career strategy factors in the construction sector in order to better prepare themselves as an effort to develop competence. The type of research used is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. In determining the respondents, probability sampling method is used with a stratified random sampling approach. The results of the research indicate the main factor that barriers a career in the construction sector is that men are more trusted to work in the field so that women's opportunities to get involved in the field are getting smaller
