Abstract

Diarrhea is one of the main causes of illness and death in almost all countries. All age groups can be affected by diarrhea, but diarrheal disease is severe with a high risk of death, especially in infants and toddlers. Environmental sanitation is one of the steps to break the chain of transmission of diseases such as diarrhea. This study aims to determine the relationship between environmental sanitation and the incidence of diarrhea in children under five in the work area of the Regional Technical Service Unit at Pengandonan Health Center, Pagar Alam City. This research is a descriptive research with quantitative methods and using a cross sectional. The sample in this study amounted to 80 respondents who were selected using purposive sampling method. Data analysis used chi-square and multiple logistic regression. The results showed that toddlers who suffered from diarrhea were 65% greater than those who did not have diarrhea (35%). Four variables related to the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in the work area of the Regional Technical Service Unit of Pengandonan Health Center Pagar Alam City are the age of the toddler (p-value = 0.013), the variable of the mother's habit of washing hands with soap (p-value = <0.0001) , variable condition of sewerage (p-value = >0.0001) and variable provision of waste bins (p-value = <0.001). Meanwhile, the three unrelated variables are gender variable (p-value= 0.358), latrine building condition variable (p-value= 0.362) and the variable physical quality of clean water (p-value- 0.615). The most dominant variable is the provision of trash bins (PR = 15,697). To break the chain of transmission of diarrhea, the researchers suggest that the community should improve the provision of trash bins in accordance with health requirements and be followed by improving the habits of mothers washing their hands with soap and improving the condition of the sewerage to avoid diarrhea.
