Abstract

Background: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) i s one of the emergency cases. Nonsteroid antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) increases the risk of UGIB. Thcre is no precise data in RSMH Palembang about incidence and risk factor of UGIB caused by the use of NSAID. This study was aimed to know the prevalence of upper digestive tract acute bleeding caused by the use of NSAID in RSMH inpatient care Palembang. Methods: This is an observasional descriptive study with population of this study is 14190. One hundred and ninety (190) patients are the UGIB patients and 84 patients fulfilled inclusion criteria. Sociodemography, main symptom, endoscopic diagnosis, and condition when discharged from the hospital were collected from medical record. Results: This study show that the prevalence of UGIB in 2011 to 2012 is 1,34%, with the risk factors are NSAID (44,7%), herbs (20,5%) and alcohol (9,47%). Out of total 85 samples, the chief complain is hematemesis (35,7%). Most of the etiology (79,7%) UGIB caused by the use of NSAID is gastritis erosive. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding contributed with used of NSAID affects men (53,6%) m o re often than women (46,4%) with case raiio 1,2:1 and predominantly affect >60 tahun (54,8%). The number of recovery and mortality UGIB contributed with the use of NSAID are 83,4% and 8,3%. Conclusion: Prevalence of UGIB contributed with the use of NSAID in RSMH Palembang is still high.
