Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a high blood pressure disease that is suffered by many patients and requires long-term treatment. Hypertensive patients require antihypertensive drug treatment to support their health conditions. Antihypertensive drugs are known to have several side effects on the oral cavity, such as enlargement of the gums, dry mouth, and decreased sense of taste. Hypertensive patients have less knowledge about the side effects of antihypertensive drugs in the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the duration of use of antihypertensive drugs on the level of knowledge of hypertensive patients about the side effects of antihypertensive drugs. Methods: A total of 85 respondents from the Internal Medicine Polyclinic of RSMH for 14 working days were obtained to take part in a survey conducted using a questionnaire adapted from the Cardiovascular Oral Health (CARDIOH) Program questionnaire that had been validated, modified, and simplified. Results: There is no relationship between the duration of drug use with the level of knowledge of the side effects of antihypertensive drugs in the oral cavity in hypertensive patients. Conclusion: The longer the use of antihypertensive drugs in hypertensive patients does not affects the patient's knowledge about the side effects of antihypertensive drugs in the oral cavity better.
