Abstract

Background: Diaper rash and urinary tract infection (UT1) are health problems which commonly occur to babies because of using disposable diapers which are seldom changed. Diaper rash is cause by irritation due to skin contact with urine in a long duration. On the other hand, UT1 is cause by uropathogenic bacteria which ascend from ureter to kidney due to humid perineal region. Purpose: This study was aimed to find out the association of disposable diaper usage with diaper rash and UTI on 0-3-year-old babies who were taken by their mothers to shopping centers in Palembang. Method: An observational analysis with cross-sectional design was used in this study. The samples were 100 mothers with inclusion criteria, who took their 0-3- year-old babies to Palembang Trade Center and Lippo Plaza Jakabaring shopping centers. Results: Mothers of disposable diaper users had high income (69%) and high education levels (61%). Most of the disposable diaper users were 1-2-year-oId (43%), girls (52%) and infrequently changed the diaper (65%). There were 58% babies had diaper rash and 33% suspected UTI. Significant association found between disposable diaper changing frequency and diaper rash (p= 0.041; OR= 2.606) and suspected UTI (p= 0.000; OR= 9.143). Conclusion: Disposable diapers which were used for a long duration changed infrequently could lead to diaper rash and UTI on babies.
