Abstract

Introduction: Ovarian epithelial tumours are 60% of all ovarian neoplasms and 80-90% of malignant ovarian tumours. Ovarian carcinoma has higher mortality rate compare to cervical and uterine cancer combined. These tumours often occur in women aged over 40 years old. This study was conducted to identify the prevalence of ovarian epithelial tumours based on histopatological examination and age distribution in the Anatomical Pathology Department of dr. Moh. Hoesin Hospital Palembang from 2008-2012. Method: This research was a descriptive observational study with cross-sectional design. This study population was all ovarian epithelial tumours that had been examined histopathologically at Anatomical Pathology Department of dr. Moh. Hoesin hospital Palembang from 2008-2012. This study used all members of population as samples. Results: There were 1133 cases of ovarian tumours. From the total of 1133 ovarian tumour cases, 740 (65,31%) cases were ovarian epithelial tumours. The distribution of these annualy were 15.27% in 2008, 17,16% in 2009, 25,41% in 2010, 20,95% in 2011 and the remaining of 21,22%. Based on histopatological type, this tumour consisted of serous (31,49%), mucinosum (51,89%), endometrioid (6,76%), clear cell (3,65%), transitional cell (0,95%), squamous cell (0,14%), mixed epithelial (4,59%) and undifferentiated and unclassified (0,59%). This ovarian epithelial tumour occoured in all age groups and most commonly in 40-49 year old age group (25,9%) Conclusion: The prevalence of ovarian epithelial tumours fluctuated annualy and the highest incidence was in 2010. Ovarian mucinosum tumour was the most common type of ovarian epithelial tumour. Ovarian epithelial tumours mostly occured in women in late reproductive period
