Abstract

Research has been carried out on the synthesis of CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag for adsorption of methylene blue dye and antibacterial test. The results of the synthesis were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS and VSM. The results of XRD characterization showed the highest intensity was located at 2θ = 35.82o with a crystal size of 7.34 nm. The results of SEM-EDS characterization showed heterogeneous morphology with constituent elements include of Co (8.66%), Fe (16.67), O (38.33%), Si (0.97%) and Ag (25.90%). The results of the VSM characterization of the hysteresis curve resulted in a saturation magnetization of CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag of 41.82 emu/g. CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag have a pHpzc value at 8.The optimum condition for the adsorption of CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag to methylene blue is pH 9 with a dye concentration of 20 mg/L and a contact time of 40 minutes with an adsorption percentage of 95.37%. The adsorption isotherm of CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag against methylene blue corresponds to the Freundlich isotherm with a regression value of 0.9222. The adsorption kinetics of CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag against methylene blue followed a pseudo second-order adsorption kinetics model with a regression value of 0.9987. CoFe2O4/SiO2/Ag has antibacterial properties that can inhibit the activity of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.625 µg/mL. A better zone of inhibition was produced by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
