Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder that can lead to intellectual disability. People with Down Syndrome require frequent health care. Until now, there is still discrimination that occurs in health services against persons with disabilities. Good knowledge and positive attitudes of nurses can help reduce discrimination and improve the quality of health services for people with Down Syndrome. This study aims to determine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses at the Palembang City Health Center toward Down Syndrome. Methods: This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional study design. The sample is a nurse on duty at the Palembang City Health Center who meets the inclusion criteria and is taken using a cluster sampling technique. The instrument in this study was the questionnaire of Knowledge and Attitude toward Down Syndrome by Alhaddad et al. Results: The results showed that nurses had adequate knowledge (93.3%) and a positive attitude (87.1%). Percentage of adequate knowledge and positive attitude in men (88.9%) and (83.3%), women (93.7%) and (87.4%). Then the D3 nurses (91.6%) and (87%), S1 (93.1%) and (89.7%), and Ners (100%) and (89.7). Furthermore, nurses who worked for <5 years (94.7%) and (86.8%), >5 years (93%) and (87.2%). With family history (85.7%) and (85.7% %), without family history (93.6%) and (87.2%). With a history of interaction (97.1%) and (84.1%), without a history of interaction (91.7%) and (88.5%). Conclusion: Nurses at the Palembang City Health Center have adequate knowledge and positive attitudes toward Down Syndrome. Keywords: Down Syndrome, Knowledge, Attitude, Nurse, Stigma
