Abstract

Background: Advances in computer technology and internet access allow a person to spend long durations of time continuously looking at VDT which can cause asthenopia. The results of American Eye-Q on technology and eye health, reported that 58% of workers had experienced asthenopia. This study aims to determine the incidence of asthenopia in administrative employees based on individual factors, environmental factors and computer factors. Methods: This research is an descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional study approach. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire online via Google form. The research sample was obtained using the total sampling method of 45 administrative staff at the Faculty of Medecine Sriwijaya University and 55 administrative staff at RSUP DR. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2022. Results: The incidence of asthenopia as much as 39%. In the age range of 46‒55 years (54.5%), female (44.3%), used minus glasses (70.6%), used soft contact lenses (40%), did not apply the 20-20-20 method (56.3%), chairs that were not ideal (41.2%), worked for ≥ 8 hours a day (42.4%). Work space with a temperature of 18°C‒28°C (40.2%) and lighting that is not ideal (100%). The monitor screen position is lower (50%), the viewing angle is 10°‒20° (42.9%), and the viewing distance is < 50 cm or > 50 cm (41.9%). Conclusion: Individual factors, environmental factors and computer factors can influence the incidence of asthenopia in administrative staff.
