Abstract

Textile industry waste is one of the sources of heavy metal pollution resulting from the dyeing and dyeing process. Jumputan fabric waste water contains one heavy metal chromium (Cr) of 1.360 mg/L. Reducing chromium levels can be done by adsorption method using adsorbents from wax banana peels. Wax banana peels contain pectin and cellulose which have the potential to absorb heavy metals. This study aims to determine the ability of wax banana peel biochar and determine the optimum contact time and optimum mass of wax banana peel biochar in adsorbing Cr metal in jumputan waste water. The research was carried out from March to June 2022, taking place at the Genetics and Biotechnology Laboratory and the Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya and the UPTD Test Laboratory of the Baristand Industry Palembang for analysis of metal samples. The research material used was banana peel wax (Musa zebrina Van Hautte). The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 repetitions. Analysis of Cr metal using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The stages of this study consisted of preparation of biochar, chemical activation of biochar, sample preparation, preparation of Cr metal solution, preparation of calibration curves, determination of contact time and optimum mass of biochar, Cr assay, determination of the adsorption kinetics model and determination of the adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that waxy banana peel biochar has the potential to be used as an adsorbent in adsorbing Cr metal in jumputan industrial waste. The optimum contact time of wax banana peel biochar in absorbing Cr metal was at 30 minutes with an absorption efficiency of 94.11%, while the optimum mass of wax banana peel biochar in absorbing Cr metal was 1.0 gram with an absorption efficiency of 24.19%.
