Abstract

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) is a disease caused by the backflow of gastric contents into the laryngopharynx. The diagnosis of LPR can be made by anamnesis in the form of a score, called the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI). One of the risk factors that can trigger LPR is coffee consumption. This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between coffee consumption and RSI scores (Reflux Symptoms Index) in medical students, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University batch 2019. This research is a cross-sectional observational analytic study with a total sampling technique. A sample of 143 students from the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University batch 2019 was obtained. The data was obtained by filling out the questionnaire through Google Form which was then analyzed using the chi-square test. The results of the highest coffee consumption level obtained from 143 samples were in the low category with a percentage of 60.8% and the highest total RSI score was in the <13 category, which was 77.6%. The results of the bivariate analysis using chi-square showed that there was no significant correlation between coffee consumption and the RSI score in medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University batch of 2019, which was expressed by a p-value = 0.418 (p> 0.05). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is no significant correlation between coffee consumption and RSI scores in medical students, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University batch 2019.
