Abstract

Tinnitus can be described as a sound such as ringing, hissing, buzzing, or roaring sound without an external source. Tinnitus is a symptom that can be caused by exposure to noise. Noise exposure can be generated by earphones which are currently popular with teenagers because they are easy to carry. As many as 35.9% of earphone users experience tinnitus. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between earphone use including the volume of earphone use, the duration of earphone use, the frequency of earphone use, and the years of earphone use on tinnitus in Medical Students, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This research is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The data used in this study is primary data which was taken in November 2022 using a total sampling technique. The data was processed to meet the inclusion criteria and not include the exclusion criteria. After that, we calculated the data, so 131 people become the sample. The data is processed again using SPSS in the form of univariate and bivariate analysis. In univariate analysis, the characteristics of the respondents in this study were found, there are 68.7% of respondents were female, the highest BMI category was the Normal category of which 70.2% of respondents, 4.6% of respondents had a history of hypertension, 1.5% of respondents had diabetes, 1.5% of respondents with smoking history, 21.4% of respondents using earphones with ≥60% of volume, 27.5% of respondents using earphones with ≥80 minutes total duration in a day, 28.2% of respondents use earphones with a frequency of ≥4 days a week, there are 81.7% of respondents who have used earphones for >3 years, there are 35.9% of respondents who experience tinnitus with the most locations in both ears as much as 53.2% of those who experience tinnitus, and the results of the THI questionnaire show that most respondents who experience tinnitus are in the degree 1 category as much as 80.9%. In the bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, the results of this study found that the correlation between earphone use including duration of use had a p-value of 0.812, frequency of use had a p-value of 0.620, and length of use had a p-value of 1. These were considered to have no significant correlation to tinnitus with a significance of p<0.05, but the volume of earphone use has a p-value of 0.048 which is considered to have a significant correlation with tinnitus. It can be concluded that the volume of earphone use is more at risk for tinnitus than the duration of use, frequency of use, and length of earphone use for tinnitus.
