Abstract

Introduction : COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 which first appeared in Wuhan, China. Uncontrolled coronavirus infection causes more macrophage infiltration and can cause systemic cytokine storm with microcirculatory dysfunction which eventually leads to sepsis. Early identification of sepsis is useful for eary prognosis and guidance in making therapeutic decisions, this will reduce mortality in septic patients. The effectiveness of using the PCT test needs to be considered because it requires additional costs and can only be performed by a few clinical laboratories. Eosinophils and CRP are also biomarkers of sepsis that can be used to diagnose sepsis, therefore more researches are needed to find alternative examinations that are more economical, fast and accurate. Method : This research uses a type of observational analytic research with a cross-sectional study design. The research data used was medical record data for 42 COVID-19 patients at dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Intensive Care Unit room in the period January - December 2022 who met the inclusion criteria and did not meet the exclusion criteria Result : The results showed that there was a moderate correlation between eosinophils and procalcitonin (p=0.002) with a correlation coefficient of -0.465. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) with procalcitonin has a moderate correlation (p=0.007) with a correlation coefficient of 0.408. Conclusion : The correlation of eosinophils and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) with procalcitonin obtained a good correlation that can be used as an alternative biomarker for sepsis in health facilities that do not have procalcitonin level testing facilities
