Abstract

Bone tumors are the abnormal growths of bone cells. Based on their biological nature, bone tumors are classified into benign, malignant, and intermediate tumors. Malignant bone tumors can be classified into primary or secondary (metastatic). This study aims to describe the characteristics of patients with malignant bone tumors who are hospitalized at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang for the 2019 – 2021 period. This research is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample is all patients with malignant bone tumors who are hospitalized at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang who met the inclusion criteria and taken using the total sampling method. The research data is secondary data obtained through compiling the medical record data at Instalasi Rekam Medik and Bagian Patologi Anatomi RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Of the 98 study samples, based on the sociodemographic characteristics of patients with malignant bone tumors, more female patients (53.1%) were found, the majority were in the age group of 11-20 years (35.7%), and many of the patients were unemployed (56.1%). Primary malignant tumors were the most common type (85.7%) and osteosarcoma was the most common histopathological type (54.1%). Most locations were on the femur (50.0%). Mass was the symptom that most patients complained about (93.9%). A total of 21 patients (21.4%) had a history of tumors and 28 patients (28.6%) with a history of trauma. Chemotherapy is the most commonly used treatment option by patients (63.3%). Patients with malignant bone tumors who are hospitalized at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2019 – 2021 has characteristics that are mostly in line with research at several hospitals and previous theories.
