Abstract

Background: During their education period, resident doctors are prone to stress, including resident doctors in the fields of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy. Stress is defined as a condition experienced by individuals when faced with a discrepancy between the demands received and the ability to overcome them. Anaesthesia resident doctors generally have a fairly high level of stress due to the heavy workload, long working hours and lack of sleep. Stress during education period can be a source of problems for residents and have an impact on their academic achievement. Achievement during studies is assessed through the Grade Point Average (GPA), which is divided into the Achievement Index per Semester (IPS) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between stress levels and GPA in residents of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at Faculty of Medicine Unsri, measured by Perceived Stress Scale (PSS10) questionnaire. Methods: This study is an analytic observational with a cross-sectional design using data in the form of a questionnaire which consists of IPS scores, GPA and a questionnaire to assess stress levels using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Respondents to this study were students of Anaesthesiology Specialist and Intensive Therapy Faculty of Medicine Unsri in November 2022. Samples were taken using a consecutive sampling technique that met the inclusion criteria. Statistical analysis using the Fisher Exact test. Results: The results showed there were 49 respondents. Based on the results of the study, there were 40 respondents with exceptional IPS (81.6%), 40 respondents with exceptional GPA (81.6%), and 27 respondents with moderate stress levels (55.1%). Fisher's exact test showed that there is no relationship between stress levels and IPS (p = 0.397) and no relationship between stress levels and GPA (p = 0.233). Conclusion: There is no relationship between stress level and GPA in residents of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University.
