Abstract

Kegemukan dapat ditentukan dengan menghitung Indeks Massa Tubuh (IMT). IMT overweight dengan penimbunan lemak mengakibatkan peningkatan level sitokin pro-inflamasi TNF-a (Tumor necrosisfactor-alpha) yang selanjutnya meningkatkan resiko terjadinya penyakit periodontal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan IMT (Index Massa Tubuh) dengan penyakit periodontal pada mahasiswa Program Studi Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Sriwijaya dengan usia 18-24 tahun. Metode penelitian berjenis survey deskriptif dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 120 mahasiswa yang terdiri dari 60 IMT normal dan 60 IMT overweight. Data diambil dengan wawancara langsung dan pemeriksaan CPITN (Community Periodontal Index ofTreatment Needs). Subyek dengan probing 1-3 mm merupakan kontrol dan poket > 3 dikategorikan sebagai penyakit periodontal. Analisa yang dilakukan menggunakan uji Chi-Squre. Hasil penelitian ini adalah kejadian penyakit periodontal IMT overweigt 63,3 % dan 16,7 % pada IMT normal dengan RP 3,8. Analisa didapatkan signifikan secara statistik (p < 0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa IMT overweight sebagai faktor resiko terjadinya penyakit periodontal pada dewasa muda (usia 18-24 tahun). Maka perlu dilakukan evaluasi Indeks Massa Tubuh (IMT) untuk mencegah progresifitas penyakit periodontal pada dewasa muda.
