Abstract

Introduction. It has been know n that there was a stagnation on family planning program and usc of contraccption. Beside that, there is no Information aboul prevalence of contraccption usage at Palembang in 2010-2011. It was reported that oral contraceptive pill is the most preferred method in Plaju and Palembang, eventhough the long term method is more promoted by government, so research abot prevalance of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) usage and faetors that associated with its usage is needed. This researeh’s purpose is to know the prevalence of OCP usage and to idenlijy whether there is associalion between age, number of living children, level of education, employment status of respondents, and participation of respondents in health insurance; and the OCP usage. Moreover, the purpose is also to know which faetors that has the strongest associalion with OCP usage among those five faetors. MethodA cross-sectional study, from 14-31 October 2011 in Puskesmas Plaju Palembang. The sample is fertile-age females (20-49 years old) who came to Puskesmas Plaju in June 2010-June 2011. Method of sampling is total sampling, the minimum amount of sample are 358 respondents (a=0.05). The data was taken from medical records (secondaty data) of the females. The data was analyzed with univariate analysis, which is the frequency distribution of the respondents, bivariate analysis, which is the Chi-Square test, and multivariate analysis which is the binary logistic regression. ResulL Total of the respondents are 362 females. Prevalence of OCP usage is 22.1%, most of the females choose OCP. From bivariate analysis there are 4 variables which associate with use of OCP: age (p=0.021), number of living children (p=0.000), level of education (p=0.005), and health insurance (p=0.002), whereas employment status doesn’t associate with use of OCP (p=0.095). From multivariate analysis there are 2 variables which associate with use of OCP: number of living children (p=0.004, OR=2.639, 95% CI=1.356- 5.135) and health insurance (p=0.002, OR=2.262, 95% CI=1.340-3.818). Factor which has the strongest association with use of OCP is number of living children. Discussion. Number of living children >2 most significantly increased the odds of using oral contraceptive pill compared with not using, controlling for other variables in the model. Prevalence of OCP usage is higher than other methods, which signify that the promotion effort of the more effective and permanent methods (long term methods) is needed. It is also required that there will be advanced analysis and research about the association ofthe other faetors (which is not included in this research) with OCP usage.
