Abstract
Chemotherapy in cancer patients can cause side effects in oral health. These side effects occur because chemotherapy agents not only destroy, suppress and prevent the spread of cancer cells but also affect normal cells. The cells that could be affected are salivary gland cells. The chemotherapy agents will influence saliva secretion thus cause xerostomia. This study aimed to examine correlation between xerostomia and chemotherapy of cancer patients in RSUP Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. This case control study was conducted in inpatient facility of RSUP Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from September 10^ to 17lh, 2012. The enrolled samples were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 30 cancer patients who had at least 2 cycles of chemotherapy and the second one comprised 30 patient Controls who didn’t get chemotherapy, didn’t suffer disease and didn’t take medications that can cause xerostomia. Patients were stated had xerostomia if wooden spatula adhered to buccal mucosa and salivary secretion was less than l,25ml for 5 minutes. At this study 80% patients who had chemotherapy have xerostomia with an odds ratio value is 26 (Cl 95% = 6,532-103,498). This figure meant that 8 of 10 cancer patients have 26 greater risk of suffering xerostomia. Thus can be concluded that there was a correlation between xerostomia and chemotherapy of cancer patients in RSUP Mohammad Hoesin Palembang.
