Abstract

Assessment of land recovery and soil conditions due to forest clearing for plantations can be done with various techniques. One of them is the methtxi of Landscape FunctionAnalysis (LFA). This study aims to assess the soil conditions on newly opened land compared to plots that had been planted 2-year-old rubber with pineapple intercropping. Location is the local farmer's property in the West Prabumulih, South Sumatra and conducted in September 2008. the LFAProcedure (Tongway and Hindley, 1995) recorded scores of soil surface conditions that include soil cover until the texture along the transect which stretched 50 meter across the diversity of ground cover. Soil surface of rubber plantation was covered by grass with a proportion of 83%, while the pineapple crop rows 14% and rubber trunk intercept only 1%. Aggregate stability values increased from approximately 23-28% to 50-63% with increased soil cover by grass, pineapple and rubber. Infiltration index value increased from an average of 25 to 40%, while the nutrient cycling index of 12% to 30%. The diversity of index values is associated with the composition of LFAdominant zones, including open land, shr(,lbs, litter, grass or trees. Directmeasurements in the field showed that the infiltrationrate was very very fast (> 25 em / hour). ValueMWD(mean weight diameter) generally increases with increasing stability index ANSILANon rubber plantations.
